Thomas was born in the small farm town of Lackenafasoge in the South West of County Cork on April 4, 1875. It was in Ballyrush, County Sligo, where he met and married Winifred Breheny on January 14, 1906. A short time later they moved to a town not far away, Aughnacliffe in County Longford.

Winifred died on August 21, 1911, two months after giving birth to her 4th child, Thomas Andrew. She is buried at Saint Columbcille Cemetery. On February 16, 1915 Thomas married Margaret Mary Hourican in County Longford. Margaret bore eight of Thomas's twelve children. She died on July 16, 1927 - about two years after the birth of her 8th child, Patrick (Patsy), in Longford. She was also buried at Saint Columbcille Cemetery.

On December 4, 1929 Thomas moved to America taking some of the youngest of his children with him. He lived his last couple of years in Washington D.C. where he died on December 9, 1936. He was interred alongside his twin brother Cornelius and his older sister Katherine, at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Washington D.C.
